Nokia Windows Phone - Expectation on the Touchscreen

Nokia Windows Phone 7
Nokia boss Stephen Elop has confirmed that the debut Nokia Windows Phone will definitely be with us by the end of the year, so let's continue looking at what to expect from this all-important new smartphone by focusing on the touchscreen.

Ever since Nokia announced plans to work with Microsoft on a new range of smarphones running on the Windows Phone 7 platform, we've been patiently counting down to the arrival of the first device of that new era knowing it'll probably be Nokia's most important new smartphone for a long time.

Of course, Nokia knows that too and has been keeping us reassured that everything is on track to deliver that pivotal first device on track, and with plenty of features on board to excite the Nokia faithful – even if it's done a great job in keeping any details very much a secret.

We can still make a good few educated guesses on what to expect based on Nokia's existing hardware, and the direction we can see the company taking through its most recent smartphone releases, and so far it's given us some interesting insights into what to look for in the first Nokia Windows Phone in terms of both the general design and the on-board camera.

When it comes to the touchscreen, the obvious first thought is one of size. Just how big will the screen be – and indeed the overall device itself as a result?

The easy answer is that we just don't know, and no amount of analysing Nokia's current product line can bring us any closer than a vaguely educated guess. For what it's worth, though, we'd put our money on something in the 3.5-inch to 4.0-inch range. Don't forget, even the Nokia N8 only has a 3.5-inch display, so it's certainly not too small for even the most premium of smartphones, while at the same time anything at 4-inches or more is likely to limit its appeal quite severely to those interested in such big-screened “superphones”.

What we are certainly looking forward to based on Nokia's recent track record is top-notch image quality, no matter how big the screen itself actually is. We've become spoilt for choice in the number of Nokia smartphones now featuring the superb contrast and clarity of AMOLED display technology on board, plus Nokia's ClearBlack display is also high on our wanted list of features.

Another display-related feature we first saw on the Nokia N9 but which is also present on the new Nokia 701 is the fact that the display sits just below the Gorilla Glass screen itself, which gives the impression of icons and the like floating on the surface of the screen.

We'd love to see that sort of visual impact from the first Nokia Windows Phone, though even if this feature doesn't appear in the debut device we have every confidence that this is the sort of direction Nokia hardware is going and we'll certainly be looking for this sort of thing down the line, not to mention all sorts of other variations in things like screen size.

What in particular is getting you excited about the screen on board the first Nokia Windows Phone? How big do you reckon it'll be? Let us know your thoughts in the Comments.
